Clues on the Structure and Composition of Galactic Disks from Studies of ‘ Superthin ’ Spirals : the Case of UGC 3697
نویسندگان
چکیده
We summarize results from an H I+optical imaging study of the “Integral Sign” galaxy, UGC 3697. UGC 3697 is a low-mass, Sd spiral that exhibits a “superthin” disk morphology despite a prounced gasous and stellar warp. Our new observations show evidence for a recent minor merger in this system that could account for its large-scale warp and a number of other properties of this galaxy. We speculate that UGC 3697 has been caught in a rather short-lived dynamical state, and may soon undergo significant structural and morphological changes.

Properties of ‘superthin’ Galaxies
‘Superthins’ are a subset of edge-on spiral galaxies exhibiting disks with large axial ratios (a/b>10), extraordinarily small stellar scale heights, and no bulge component. These are thus examples of dynamically cold, pure disk galaxies. We have recently obtained multiwavelength (H i, optical, NIR) observations for a large sample of superthin spirals. Our data lead to a picture of superthins as...
متن کاملEvidence for a Large Stellar Bar in the Low Surface Brightness Galaxy UGC 7321 . ⋆
Late-type spiral galaxies are thought to be the dynamically simplest type of disk galaxies and our understanding of their properties plays a key role in the galaxy formation and evolution scenarios. The low surface brightness (LSB) galaxy UGC 7321, a nearby, isolated, " superthin " edge-on galaxy, is an ideal object to study those purely disk dominated bulge-less galaxies. Although late type sp...
متن کاملColliding molecular clouds in head-on galaxy collisions
We present further observations of molecular gas in head-on collisions of spiral galaxies, this time of the CO(J = 1 → 0) and CO(J = 2 → 1) lines in the UGC 813 – UGC 816 system. UGC 813/6 are only the second known example of head-on spiral-spiral collisions, the first example being the UGC 12914/5 pair. Strong CO emission is present in the bridge between UGC 813 and 816, unassociated with stel...
متن کاملun 2 00 9 Dark matter dominance at all radii in the superthin galaxy UGC 7321
We model the shape and density profile of the dark matter halo of the low surface brightness, superthin galaxy UGC 7321, using the observed rotation curve and the H i scale height data as simultaneous constraints. We treat the galaxy as a gravitationally coupled system of stars and gas, responding to the gravitational potential of the dark matter halo. An isothermal halo of spherical shape with...
متن کاملCo Detection and Millimeter Continuum Emission from Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
We present BIMA and IRAM CO (1–0) observations of seven low surface brightness (LSB) galaxies, including three large spiral galaxies with faint disks but prominent bulges and four relatively small LSB galaxies with irregular disks. The giant LSB galaxies are UGC 5709, UGC 6614, and F568-6 (Malin 2). The smaller LSB galaxies are NGC 5585, UGC 4115, UGC 5209, and F583-1. The galaxies were selecte...
